Geological Summary The underlying rocks are the Mattson Formation quartzose sandstand and shale, the Besa River Formation (Devonian/Carboniferous) dark, pyritic siliceous shale, and the Dunedin Formation (Devonian) grey, well-bedded, fine-grained limestone. Minor galena and sphalerite with calcite, quartz and barite nodules occur in hard, cherty mudstone concretions in black shale near the top of the Besa River Formation.
